Get the Perfect Look with Hi LitesMay 27
Hi lites and lo lites can take your hair to a whole new level by adding in dimension and colour that accents your style. Hilites can emphasize eye color, bring out cheek bones, and even slim full faces. They show off the lines of your hair cut, create depth, and the illusion of fullness or volume. The most important factors to achieving a perfect hi liteis the size, amount, placement, and colour.
The two most common techniques used are balayage (freehand painting) and foil. Balayage is the French word for “to sweep,” and it refers to the sweeping motion the brush makes when painting bleach onto the hair. The results are a less systematic and more natural look than foil hi lites. We recommend balayage for edgy, beachy looks and ombre. Foils involve weaving strands of hair and painting a lightning agent on them before wrapping them in foil. The foils can be placed in different patterns depending on where the hair is parted and how it’s worn. Foils can be done with hair dye, oil bleaches, and many other gentle products. The colourist will plan exactly where everything is placed, as well as the size and lightness of each foil.
Placement and size
The thickest and lightest pieces should frame the face and decrease in size and lightness toward the crown. Tight, close hi lites will lighten the look of the colour and reduce the contrast.
Lo lites refers to strands of darkness woven back into the hair to return contrast to hair that’s been highlighted repeatedly. They can be used to bridge the gap between a very dark base colour that has very light hi lites. By weaving an in-between shade of lo lite, you can connect the hair’s other colours and avoid looking stripy.
